New York Rangers to work with NYC Dept. of Education to Introduce Hockey Curriculum to East Harlem School District

New York, January 29, 2019 – The New York Rangers with support from the Aspen Institute, the National Hockey League, the New York City Department of Education and Columbia University will introduce a street hockey platform in all District 4 and 5 elementary and middle schools for the 2019-2020 school year. To celebrate the announcement of the program, the Rangers, the Aspen Institute and the NYC Department of Education will hold a street hockey clinic hosted by Rangers alumnus Kevin Weekes at William Paca School in East Harlem on Friday, February 1 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

As a part of the program, each school will receive a set of street hockey equipment, a curriculum created in partnership with the New York City Department of Education and a training session for all physical education teachers in participating schools. The Rangers have developed this program for over 40 schools between 96th Street and 142nd Street in East Harlem, impacting an estimated 13,000 students, to begin in Fall 2019. This Spring, six schools in these districts will kick off the pilot program.

Born from a research study conducted by the Aspen Institute's Project Play: Harlem initiative, which found that children in the East Harlem community lacked access to activity and sports opportunities, specifically the students had a high interest in hockey, this program demonstrates the Rangers commitment to making hockey accessible to all and to keeping kids active and healthy through sports.

In May 2018, the NHL joined 19 other organizations as part of the Aspen Institute's Project Play 2020, a national initiative mobilizing the sports industry to take steps in growing sport participation and related metrics among youth.
