To better understand the state of youth sports in local communities — programs, facilities, quality and access — the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation commissioned three regional State of Play studies by the Aspen Institute Sports & Society Program, in partnership with local community foundations. Visit the Regional State of Play website.

In June 2017, the Aspen Institute produced the nation's first regional state of play reports: Southeast Michigan, Western New York, and Greater Rochester and the Finger Lakes. More than 1,000 adults and youth informed the State of Play report through interviews, roundtables, focus groups and surveys. With the help of a George Washington University research team, the Aspen Institute analyzed the region through its existing Project Play framework of eight strategies in eight sectors.

Eight plays. Eight simple ways you and everyone else in the community — whether you’re a parent, a coach, a business owner, an educator — can get involved.
