How to Manage the Crisis

Our second webinar explored how youth sports leaders in non-profits, for-profits, and parks and recs departments are tackling issues during the pandemic. Topics included access to revenue from donors and government resources; managing expenses, staffing and requests for refunds; and communication with parents, youth and the broader community.

TOM FARREY

ASPEN INSTITUTE SPORTS & SOCIETY PROGRAM

Tom is a pioneering journalist and executive director of the Aspen Institute's Sports & Society Program, which he founded in 2011 with the mission to convene leaders, facilitate dialogue and inspire solutions that help sport serve the public interest.

In 2013, Tom created Project Play, a multi-stage initiative of the Sports & Society Program that helps stakeholders build healthy communities through sports. Since then, hundreds of organizations from across the eight sectors that touch the lives of children have used Project Play's framework to introduce programs, strategies, partnerships, tools, and grant-making, while advancing the national conversation around youth sports through, among other efforts, the 2019 media campaign Don’t Retire, Kid.

BRENDAN TUOHEY

PEACEPLAYERS INTERNATIONAL

Brendan and his brother Sean established PeacePlayers International [PPI] in 2000, grounded on their own life experiences that showed that “children who play together can learn to live together.” While Sean led PPI’s efforts in the field as it started its first operations in South Africa, Brendan built the organization from Washington, DC. He has led the organization in its expansion to Northern Ireland (2002), Israel and the West Bank (2005) and Cyprus (2006), and launched PPI’s first domestic program in New Orleans (2008), which was transitioned to full local ownership in the summer of 2009. Brendan lives in Silver Spring, Maryland, with his wife, Jody, and three children. He is a 1996 graduate of Colgate University where he majored in Philosophy and Religion and played basketball. He is an adjunct professor at Georgetown University’s Master’s Program in Sport Management.

LISA FRATES

Lisa has extensive experience in both youth sports and in sports management. Prior to joining the BSC team Lisa served as the Program Manager for the Salt Lake City Corporation where she planned and executed events for the Salt Lake City Regional Athletic Complex including US Youth Soccer’s Region IV Presidents Cup, World Rugby, and the WCLA and the MCLA Lacrosse Championships. She was directly involved in client relations, contract negotiations, event sales, and staff management. In 2016 she was awarded the prestigious Game Changer award by Sports Connect for her efforts in the sports tourism industry. She has also served as the Executive Director for the Utah Lacrosse Association for over six years, helping to expand participation and the reach of the sport in the state.Lisa currently possesses a Bachelor of Arts Degree from St. Lawrence University and is currently at Georgetown University’s Masters of Professional Studies: Sports Management program.

JACK CASTLE
SPORT ADMINISTRATOR
COLUMBUS (OHIO) PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT

Jack has been with the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department since 1998 and has served as the Administrator of the Sports Office since 2006. He currently oversees an annual budget of almost $3 million dollars while operating 5 athletic complexes, multipurpose fields and rooms, 3 soccer complexes and Lou Berliner Sports Park, the largest ball diamond complex in the country.  These sports facilities serve diverse programs such as volleyball, basketball, lacrosse, soccer, field hockey, fastpitch, baseball, futsal and more. He has extensive experience in strategic planning, event operations and overseeing capital improvements at various types of sports facilities.  

He is an experienced leader both on and off the field. Either as a tournament director or a host, Jack has been a part of over 1,500 tournament events in his career in various sports and activities. Considered an expert by many in the areas of setting goals, measuring results, analyzing needs and creating unique solutions designed to meet desired outcomes.
